This is the 13 part British/German co-production 'Star Maidens'. Ridiculously cool in a dated, 70s, retro-futuristic, sexual revolution sort of way, it is the story of the planet Medusa from the star Proxima Centauri, part of the Alpha Centauri system, which is ruled by the female of the humanoid race.
Foreshadowing 'Space:1999', a giant comet rips the planet from its orbit and sends it hurtling through space in our direction.

This show looks very much like one of Gerry Anderson's shows such as 'UFO', 'Thunderbirds' and 'Space:1999' because they shared the same production designer---Keith Wilson---and various other technical crew. Also features a cool, funky synth score.
And in an interesting bit of casting, Gareth Thomas, who played Blake in Blake's 7, is one of the two men revolting against the establishment, ever the system-bucker.
